In an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, UT Austin has announced that starting next year it will no longer offer scholarships to National Merit Scholars.  They will honor the current student National Merit Scholarships but will cease offering them in the Fall of 2010.

The decision was reached due to mounting concerns regarding budget cuts, and the university wants to transfer these scholarship funds to need based aid.  UT Austin enrolled more National Merit Scholars than any other university except Harvard.  UT’s scholarships averaged about 13,000 over four years, and the school’s endowment supported 20% of the funding.
