I know in the last blog I talked about the twist and turns of college and boy did I stumble upon a huge twist and turn. Something, hopefully, most students don’t have to go through, and especially not in their freshman year.
Never did I think this would ever happen to me but it did. Unfortunately a little over a week ago I had to be rushed to the ER. First off, I never get hurt that bad, maybe a few brusies and a twisted ankle but never enough to go to the emergency room. Well this freak accident did me in. I was sitting outside in front of Ellis on their porch swing bench. I was with four other friends and three of us were on the bench. After swinging for a pretty long time the chain holding it up on the side I happened to be sitting on broke. It happened so fast and all I can recall from this was watching the other people across from me go up as I went down. Somehow I ended up being flung off the bench and under it so it hit me pretty hard. Also my friends who were on the bench with me were still on the bench. So heavy bench, plus two heavy boys equals me screaming. There was concerte below us so I landed on that and kind of rolled backwards into the bushes and into the dirt.
In result of all this I was unable to walk with out help and within twenty minutes or so could not walk at all and had to be carried. So I went to the ER, got a tetanus shot, a painkiller shot, and a perscription for vicodin. I was out for the next few days sleeping on the futon in my dorm room. After about three days my situation had not improved so my mom actually flew up to Arkansas to see me and by that night I was in the hospital having surgery. I had too much swelling and the doctor needed to drain the blood it was filling up with, and doing so would speed up my recovery.
So I was out of school for a whole week! I had to work with faculty members who would email my teachers and give them an update. To let them know that this isn’t just a case of the flu but a serious injury and to help me as much as they could. Which luckily my teachers were very helpful and gave me extended time to get assignments turned in. I was very grateful for that.
So I hit a brick wall, was unable to attend school, and then had to pick myself back up and work harder than ever to make up for lost time. I never thought I would experience this during my freshmen year of college. I was unable to do hardly anything. I had to move rooms so I could be on the first floor because I couldn’t go up three flights of stairs and I had to be in a wheelchair for awhile because I could not sit down to save my life with out some sort of support. That was also very frustrating and I quickly realized that my campus is not very wheelchair accessible. It was so hard for me to get around that I had to have my wonderful friends go with me everywhere because there was no way I could do it myself.
If it was not for my friends, the doctors, and my mom I would have been having an extremely difficult time trying to recover and the process would have been much slower. I had to learn very quickly that time is precious in college and a missed class you can’t get back. It’s hard to catch up.
I hope that no one has had to experience this kind of difficulty their first year of college. Oh and yes I am doing much better now and I am actually very excited to be back in classes. Although studying will consume me the next few weeks of my life to make up lost studying time. Oh well, thats college.
Glad I could be there for you! Love, Mom
Wow! I am so sorry to hear this happened. I hope you are well on your way to recovery now!!!
