Gay/Lesbian students need to go an extra step in researching colleges. Even if you are not ready to come out just yet, there are plenty of ways to research colleges to be sure you are entering a gay friendly environment. You certainly do not want to choose a college that is not gay/lesbian friendly. So, first steps.
The first thing I advise students to do after they have expressed interest in certain schools is to make sure the college has LGBT clubs or organizations. A college that does not have a gay/straight alliance or an institution approved LGBT Pride Club or Organization does not sound like a good prospect. I had a student who was very interested in a wonderful university in the south, but this university had turned down a request for a gay/straight alliance charter. NOT a good sign! So number one: make sure there are clubs/organizations on campus and formally approved by the college. Second, once you have determined that the club/organization exists, contact the club and chat with the president or membership chair. Ask questions, make sure you understand the campus climate when it comes to being gay/lesbian friendly.
Three, do they have gender neutral housing? Many, many colleges now offer gender neutral housing to their diverse student bodies. Check this list, and then check on the college website, to make sure of each school’s policy.
Fourth, look in the school catalog and make sure that courses are available regarding gender, gender studies, etc. and fifth, nothing takes the place of visiting. You simply must visit the campus and the surrounding area, and do your research about the gay community. Nothing takes the place of an actual visit.
