Students who are preparing to go to college or who are already in college will be required to have a “two track” mind, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. Technology, health care, and education are still the “hot” job sectors, but additional skills and knowledge will be necessary.
Some of the most sought after degrees will be in computer science, engineering and finance, but students also need to have a second area of emphasis in order to take advantage of growing trends. According to the article, “Career experts say the key to securing jobs in growing fields will be coupling an in-demand degree with expertise in emerging trends. For example, communications pros will have to master social media and the analytics that come with it; nursing students will have to learn about risk management and electronic records; and techies will need to keep up with the latest in Web marketing, user-experience design and other Web-related skills.”
One of the most interesting trends is the growth of social media and how it must be factored into techie jobs as well as business, marketing and public relations. These jobs will require in depth knowledge about Facebook, My Space, Twitter…and the future social media that hasn’t even been invented yet. Public Relations jobs will increase tremendously in the next 8-10 years, by as much as 25%. Job titles will be changing to reflect our new online reality, a title like interactive creative director will combine the communications skills of a public relations director with the computer skills of social media.
