liberal arts, college admission blogs

Lynn O’Shaughnnesy from CBS Money Watch posted 5 reasons to attend a liberal arts college.  I agree with all of them.  What makes liberal arts so great? Read on, my friend!

1. Liberal Arts Colleges are student focused. They teach undergraduates. That is what they do. There are “star” profs at universities and ivies…but they never go near undergraduates.

2. Small class size. Personal attention. Discussion, dialogue, debate. Hands on learning beats a lecture hall with 300 students any time.

3. “Great grad school preparation. It’s a fallacy that you have to attend a state flagship or Ivy to enjoy a good shot at grad school. Liberal arts schools dominate the list of the top 10 institutions that produce the most students who ultimately earn doctorates. Per capita, liberal arts colleges produce twice as many student who earn a PhD in science than other institutions. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Liberal arts college provide the sort of research experiences that universities often reserve for grad students.” Lynn Shaugnessy.

4. Employers value liberal arts grads because they have been taught to think, problem solve and write. Not all schools teach these skills. As a professor, I met many university students who could not write, and who got through college without learning to write. Writing is a skill worth having, ask any employer.

5. Cost. Yes, they look more expensive at first, but then check out the merit and financial aid…they offer so much more than state universities.

So, yes, you should check out liberal arts schools!
