Upcoming College Travels!

college adventures
I LOVE visiting college campuses, and my spring will be full of them! As a Professional Member of the IECA I have to meet strict standards for the number of colleges visited per year, but it is never a problem for me since I love doing it.  Anywhere I travel I always pop by a few campuses!  I particularly enjoy visiting and chatting with the students.  It is truly the best way to see a campus. I will be visiting New Orleans in two weeks so I will be visiting Tulane and Loyola, and may try to squeeze in a couple of others….and I have just decided to go visit my son in Southern California where he is a first year Johnston student at the University of Redlands. So I plan to take a look at Occidental, Pepperdine, and Chapman…. then I’m off to Boston in mid-April where I have Curry College and Dean College to visit, and I think perhaps Babson and Boston College….then, Chicago! I am already on the schedule for Northwestern, DePaul, Lake Forest and U of Chicago. It will be fun, and I will be blogging and posting photos, so stay tuned!

Bryn Mawr

Many may think that women’s colleges are outdated, but think again: at a woman’s college the leadership roles are taken by women, the opportunities for participation in academics are for women, so it is not surprising that Bryn Mawr, like its sisters, produces leaders and individualists who choose their own paths. These students have access to strong, amazing female role models. They also have access and cross-registration with Haverford, Swarthmore and Penn.

hampshire college

Hampshire’s motto is “an education as unique as you are.” I think that is completely accurate. Hampshire is filled with creative individualists, each on their own path. That is what makes Hampshire so special. The college is one of the few who truly offer individualistic programs and the opportunity to create and craft one’s own major.

mcdaniel
Never heard of McDaniel College in Westminster, MD? It is what college consultant’s call a “hidden gem”, an institution of excellence that has much to recommend it, but it has stayed “under the radar”. McDaniel is about 30 miles from Baltimore and 50 from Washington DC, nestled in the mountains, with a small town feel and big city opportunities. Founded in 1867 as Western Maryland College and renamed for 1980 alum, professor, administrator, parent and trustee William R McDaniel, little McDaniel throws a big academic punch. (more…)

Colleges are like people!

Written on November 13th, 2009 by Tam Warner Mintonno shouts

They have distinctive personalities. I just returned from visiting four wonderful universities in and around Austin, Tx….each is a great school for the right fit student, but these four colleges have very different personalities. Colleges and universities are not “one size fits all”. (more…)

Travels with Tam: St Edward’s University

st edwards, college adventures Located on a hilltop in Austin, Tx, St. Edward’s University overlooks the city skyline. The campus is lovely, with shady trees, inviting lush grass, and contrasting architecture. St Edward’s is a Catholic university which embraces a global perspective, and I saw quite a bit of diversity in the student body while walking around campus. St Ed’s mascot is the Hilltopper, a mountain goat, and their hand signal is similar to the Longhorn, just bend your fingers to illustrate the goat! (more…)
