What high school guidance counselors know about college admissions….

Ummm, not much, according to CBS Money Watch. High School guidance counselors are tremendously overworked, and most do not have training in college counseling. The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has data showing student-counselor ratios such as 986:1 in California and 799:1 in Minnesota.

Can a College rescind your admission offer? YES.

Yes, yes, yes. Do they? Yes, 1 in 4 colleges reports that they revoke offers of admission, according to Richard L Nesbitt, Director of Admission at Williams College, the most common reasons are a downturn in your senior grades or a student giving a deposit to more than one college. The NY Times Choice Blog is keeping track for us, so check the link if you want to find out about Early Decision statistics this year! It will be interesting to see how this season’s ED applicants shake out. Some colleges experienced more ED applicants, but many also had less.

19 colleges investigated for gender bias

A Civil Rights panel has subpeonaed 19 universities and colleges to investigate whether they are using gender in the admission process. Title IX prohibits any educational institution which accepts federal funds from discriminating due to gender. This has been a very sticky issue when we consider that the majority of college students are female (60% and growing).

Early Decision results…any day now….

Surprisingly, many colleges reported record numbers of early applications this year. Why is this a surprise? Because of the economy. In 2006 Harvard and Princeton joined UNC and U of Delaware in doing away with early admissions. Early Decision seemed to put so much pressure on students that schools were backing off of the practice. So why is it that this year, more students have applied Early Decision than ever before?

Bennington College is in Bennington, VT, less than an hour from Albany, NY. Nestled into the Green Mountain region, it is in a relatively remote location while being close enough to Boston and New York City for weekend excursions. It is also close enough to skiing and outdoor adventure venues, and within 90 minutes to the Adirondack Mountains. Enough about location, because that is the least of what Bennington has to offer.
