Many Asperger’s students have at least normal IQs, and many have exceptional talents and abilities. This year I had the pleasure of working with a young man with Asperger’s whom I found delightful; his sense of humor is acute, and his mathematical and scientific knowledge and aptitude is off the charts. Many Asperger’s students go on to college, but care must be taken, not only in the college environments from an academic standpoint, but also in housing and living skills.

ADHD: My Case

I have listened for many years to people who believe ADHD is a myth. One would think that with brain scans and MRIs showing different brain functioning between “normal” and “ADD” brains would put the myth to rest. It still lingers on. Is Attention Deficit Disorder a new disorder, discovered and hyped in the 70s and 80s? The condition was actually first described by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845. He was also a poet as well as a medical doctor, and he wrote a “book” of poems and stories called “The Story of Fidgety Phillip”.

It is what college consultant’s call a “hidden gem”, an institution of excellence that has much to recommend it, but it has stayed “under the radar”. McDaniel is about 30 miles from Baltimore and 50 from Washington DC, nestled in the mountains, with a small town feel and big city opportunities. Founded in 1867 as Western Maryland College and renamed for 1980 alum, professor, administrator, parent and trustee William R McDaniel, little McDaniel throws a big academic punch.
