The empty nest…it does, at times, feel quite empty. The four of us are a close family, and raising our children was my number one priority. My little darlings, shown above with their mommy, are now 22 and 19, one in grad school and one in his first year of college. So now Randy and I spend most of our time together without children. Most of the time it is fine and enjoyable….sometimes, the house is so quiet. It isn’t just that Alexandra and Wes have left….their friends (who spent A LOT of time here also) are gone as well. Financial Aid packages are not set in stone! You can “negotiate”, ie, ask for more. In these uncertain economic times, our incomes are not necessarily steady, so if your income for 2009 was less than 2008, request that the financial aid office take your revised income into consideration. (more…)

During this Winter break I have had the pleasure of catching up with “former” students (they are never former to me, always MY students!). I am always so happy to discover they are doing well, taking on challenges, and exploring the world. Sometimes you discover that their road is harder than they expected it to be, but I always hope they will rise to the occasion. I love hearing about their learning experiences and college adventures. Do you have a financial plan for your student at college? Are they going to save money to live on? Are you giving them an allowance? Do they need a car and gas money? Should they have a credit card? These are important questions, and it is equally important that you have the answers before your child goes off to college. (more…)

A college education is expensive, and costs are going up. Figuring out how you will come up with the necessary funds to pay for college requires planning, perseverance, and researching the options. If your family has not saved the total amount you will need for college or does not earn enough to pay for it, you can still attend college–even the college of your choice. That’s what financial aid is all about. (more…)
I wanted to give everyone this link for a great blog about the Thanksgiving break! Your son or daughter is coming home for the holiday…what should you expect? What you should NOT expect is for your “child” to stay home with you the whole time…. (more…)

I recently blogged about an article in the Boston Globe which discussed a student having a “concierge“. This blog from the Georgetown Voice gives us a look at an employment ad: Georgetown sophomore seeking a personal assistant. My, college kids are busy these days!
If you are in need of a laugh, as the colleague who sent this link to me said, read this one!

A new book, Crossing the Finish Line, released disturbing findings about 200,000 public university freshman who started out in 1999. 44% of these undergraduates dropped out, and the authors warn that America is in danger of losing it’s “competitive edge”. The article, appearing in US News, can be read in full by clicking HERE.
