In this difficult economic year, students who do not need financial aid have a better chance than usual in getting into the school of their choice, but only if they are “borderline”. PS: Marilee Jones was in the news quite a bit last year as she resigned from MIT due to the institution learning that her educational resume was….well, incorrect, shall we say? By all accounts, however, Marilee was a great admission dean.

Bennington College is in Bennington, VT, less than an hour from Albany, NY. Nestled into the Green Mountain region, it is in a relatively remote location while being close enough to Boston and New York City for weekend excursions. It is also close enough to skiing and outdoor adventure venues, and within 90 minutes to the Adirondack Mountains. Enough about location, because that is the least of what Bennington has to offer. Do you have a financial plan for your student at college? Are they going to save money to live on? Are you giving them an allowance? Do they need a car and gas money? Should they have a credit card? I am so proud to be a professional member of the Independent Educational Consultant’s Association. The IECA is a “not-for-profit, international professional Association representing full-time experienced independent educational advisors. Chartered in 1976, the Association’s headquarters is located in the Washington, DC area. IECA sponsors professional training institutes, workshops and conferences, publishes a directory of qualified consultants, offers information to students and their families regarding school selection issues and works to ensure that those in the profession adhere to the highest ethical and business standards.” There are alot of educational consultants out there…but not all of them are members of the IECA. In an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education it has been reported that 58 colleges have passed the $50,000 mark for tuition and room and board. Only 5 colleges were in that neighborhood last year. 224 private colleges and universities are over $40,000. Where is the ceiling, or is there one at all? (more…)

When visiting college campuses, it is always wise to consider the campus crime rate. Questions about this do not usually elicit much information from tour guides or admissions offices. Regarding this information, you’ll have to be a bit of a detective. There are online sources, and when visiting, make time for a chat at the campus public safety office. (more…)
