On this first night of Hanukkah I think of Tracy and light candles in her memory. As they burn I also think about her family and friends as Tracy's Judaism was such a core part of her being. I am sure there are people all over the world thinking about Tracy today, and every day. Whether or not you are Jewish, light a candle for Tracy tonight and for the 8 nights of Hanukkah.

My son is on a plane as I write, heading home for Thanksgiving. He is a freshman at the University of Redlands, and he is loving every moment of it. Sadly, my daughter won't be home this year, she is in Maine with family, and we will miss her. She is doing a postgrad program in photography at BU. I will also see many of my "other children", friends of my children and students both past and present. I am looking forward to seeing them all, but I am also reflecting on Tracy Fisher, my student and blogger who passed away so suddenly just a month ago.

The freshmen 15? What freshmen 15, oh you mean the 15 pounds I’m in the process of losing? Ten down five to go. People talk about college and gaining weight as if they’re synonymous but this doesn’t have to be true. It’s actually quite simple to stay away from this weight. Find a physical activity that you love. Now this takes some searching, and it doesn’t have to be a conventional activity.

acy Fisher was a sweet girl that I knew when I attended Richardson High School, and we hung out with a lot of the same people. I remember seeing her in F Hall outside of theater every day at 4:11, right after school let out. We would always gather in the Fine Arts hall and just chit chat... and never did I see Tracy without a huge grin on her face! She lit up a room. I didn't particularly know her very well, but it was apparent that everyone loved her and she had a promising future.

Another twist of college is that tragic, unfortunate, unexpected things happen while you are away and you can't always go home to be with those who will comfort you. This past Monday, October 19th, my friend Tracy Fisher passed away. I was shocked and could not believe it was true. Tracy and I were in girl scouts together as kids. I remember that she was always so bright and happy. When she smiled, you just wanted to smile too because she had such a big beautiful smile.

I'm a friend and colleague of Tam's, and I follow her blog with great interest and love to see what she's up to. So last week when I learned about what happened to Tracy, I was deeply moved. I live over 10,000 miles away in Dubai, yet my heart ached and I cried with all of you.
