Texas rewrites History

The Texas Board of Education has approved an academic curriculum that presents a “conservative” viewpoint of history. It stresses the “superiority” of American capitalism and questions the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a secular government without state sponsored religion according to an article in the New York Times and the Dallas Morning News.

Binge Drinking, Definition and Effects

Binge drinking, particularly on college campuses, is a real problem. First, let us define “binge drinking”: it is defined as having 5 or more drinks in a row, in other words, drinking a large quantity of alcohol quickly for the purpose of getting drunk. A social drinker will have a few drinks throughout the evening, but the goal isn’t to get “dead drunk”. Yes, I am aware that drinking and college go together like peanut and bread. I am not talking about social drinking, though, I am talking about binge drinking.

Second Semester Sophomore…and spring break!

I’m in my second semester as a sophomore, which means I’m almost halfway done, scary! So far this semester has been pretty good. I have selected a major, and minor, all I have to do is declare it! I will be majoring in music along with a minor in sociology and anthropology! If I am not too overwhelmed and have the time I will double major with the two studies.

I was honored to be asked by The Fairhill School to give a talk about college fit to their sophomores and juniors. It was a great time, with interested and bright students. In case you don’t know, The Fairhill School is a “private, non-profit college preparatory school serving students in grades one through twelve. Fairhill’s primary purpose is to provide a superior education for students of average and above intelligence who have been diagnosed with a learning difference such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Auditory Processing Disorder, or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.” (more…)

Avatar

I know that movie is old news, but I was raiding wikipedia like I often do and I came across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Themes_in_Avatar

It’s pretty long as far as wikipedia articles go. I saw Avatar in imax 3-D and it was cool. I mean it was long… and it was Pocahontas… but a lot of things exploded and got eaten by those dragon things and got shot, that was entertaining. (more…)

college adventures
Most of my students start out having no clear idea of what they want to do with their lives. Often, students seem worried about that, but actually it is completely normal for a 16 or 17 year old to be unsure of what they want out of life. I’d be more concerned if they had it completely mapped out! (more…)

tam warner minton, tammy warner
60% of high school students rate their high school college counselors poor or fair at best, according to a story in the USA Today. That really is not surprising when one considers that high school counselors are not trained to give college advice, they have so many other guidance tasks to fulfill, and they have far too many students to work with.
