Forbes came out with a list of the best used cars for teenagers (a list of vehicles with safety records keeping insurance costs down.)

Texting, Facebooking, Tweeting

The new communication. And I feel sure there will be more technologies. Is this a good or a bad thing? Well, history shows us that all new technologies are used for both, and have good and bad effects on people and society. The other thing history has shown is that these new forms of tech [...]

Waitlisted? Don’t count on getting in!

Move on down the road and choose from the colleges who WANT you. Check out this article on CBS Money Watch and just remember….those who clear the waitlist do not get merit aid! Choose from the colleges who really want you…the ones who said YES.

Who Owns the college application process?

Answer: the student. I believe that it is the student who must be responsible for the college application process. (Of course the parents must be involved in some aspects, don’t go overboard!). Many parents are loath to take a backseat…they believe they know best, and hey, maybe in some areas they do. BUT when it [...]

Texas rewrites History

The Texas Board of Education has approved an academic curriculum that presents a “conservative” viewpoint of history. It stresses the “superiority” of American capitalism and questions the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a secular government without state sponsored religion according to an article in the New York Times and the Dallas Morning News. This blog will not be about college news per se, but I think this topic is relevant regarding the state of education in our country. As a former university Lecturer, these changes to the public academic curriculum should be aired and discussed. (more…)

Binge Drinking, Definition and Effects

binge drinking
Binge drinking, particularly on college campuses, is a real problem. First, let us define “binge drinking”: it is defined as having 5 or more drinks in a row, in other words, drinking a large quantity of alcohol quickly for the purpose of getting drunk. A social drinker will have a few drinks throughout the evening, but the goal isn’t to get “dead drunk”. Yes, I am aware that drinking and college go together like peanut butter and bread. I am not talking about social drinking, though, I am talking about binge drinking. (more…)

college adventures
I’m in my second semester as a sophomore, which means I’m almost halfway done, scary! So far this semester has been pretty good. I have selected a major, and minor, all I have to do is declare it! I will be majoring in music along with a minor in sociology and anthropology! If I am not too overwhelmed and have the time I will double major with the two studies. (more…)

Political Outskirts

In case you didn’t know, I go to a hippy school in southern California. Naturally, this draws a large number of hippy sorts of kids. I write jokes in my free time and here’s one I told at open mic: “Hippies aren’t called that because they’re hip or hipsters. It’s because they’re hypocrites. They’re always saying give peace a chance but I find they aren’t receptive when I give them a piece of my mind (pause for laughter).” I know it’s a pun but it got an okay laugh.

I’m reluctant to write this one…

But I think it’s probably important to know something of what you’re getting into. A little bit of the underbelly of what can happen when you choose to party and don’t take care of yourself or go out with reliable people

Advice to the high school college lookers

What a FANTASTIC day, especially for a Monday. I got up, dog-tired, went to class and was done by 11. The teacher in my first class woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, but what can you do. By the time class was done, the sun was shining, it was a beautiful 72 degrees, and not a cloud in the sky. I spent the entire day outside!! It was amazing. This is the first warm beautiful day in Oxford, Mississippi in what seems to be forever!
