Facebook is funding fellowships for five Doctoral students for the 2010-11 academic year. The chosen fellows will receive tuition and fees, travel and a $30,000.00 stipend. There are other benefits as well.

Juniors have recently received the results of their October PSATs. So far, every junior I know improved dramatically from their sophomore year scores. It is important for juniors to take standardized tests this spring and not wait until fall of the senior year. Take the SAT and the ACT, decide which test shows your abilities to your advantage, and concentrate your effort on that standardized test.

I don’t mean that in the sense that the classes are hard. Not that they’re exactly easy. But just the whole experience. Yeah, its fun. You’ve got your parties and your school activities, and of course the infamous sports (although maybe not exactly at Baylor). That part is great. But they don’t prepare you for the loneliness.

She seems to feel that it is not a “cool” thing to do, that it causes anxiety and that most people you are “friends” with on FB don’t care anyway. She has received some interesting comments!

Kiplinger.com has published the top 100 Best Values in public college/universities. As with any ranking system, it is best to know exactly what the methodology consists of. Kiplinger starts with data from Petersons/Nelnet (www.petersons.com; www.nelnet.com) on 500 public institutions, then narrows it using the college’s reported ACT/SAT averages, GPAs, and four and six year graduation rates. Then Kiplinger uses academic “quality” and cost indices to formulate the 100 best values.

“We find that students who attended more selective colleges do not earn more than other students who were accepted and rejected by comparable schools but attended less selective colleges. However, the average tuition charged by the school is significantly related to the students’ subsequent earnings. Indeed, we find a substantial internal rate of return from attending a more costly college. Lastly, the payoff to attending an elite college appears to be greater for students from more disadvantaged family backgrounds.”
